Christmas 2011 in Baguio City

My husband's niece has been inviting us to join them in spending Christmas in Baguio City. However, due to budget constraints and transportation issues, we were hesitant to give our commitment. It was around lunch time last Friday when we received a text message from her informing us that we will be leaving for Baguio that evening. No more issues. Everything has been resolved. Another impromptu decision was made! I love this kind of adventure but I hate the stress that comes with the instant preparation.

Because I have to leave in the afternoon to claim the Archos tablet that I won during the 2011 Bloggers Night, I packed our clothes and things that need to bring as soon as we received the message. I left early to meet the person who will deliver the tablet to me. I was just so surprised that there was no traffic in  Baclaran area, which is the least to expect at the peak of the Christmas season. As soon as I received the gadget, I immediately left our meeting place. No more fuss. I need to hurry as I have to buy extra gifts for our nephews and nieces who will be coming with us.

Merry Christmas from The House of JCJEE

The House of JCJEE wishes everybody a Merry Christmas!

Christ is the reason of the season. God gave His Son to save the world and redeem us from our sins.

May all of us find the reason of the season in our hearts and may this season us all success, happiness, and good health.

A Wedding at Manila Cathedral

Whoever said that the word June bride was derived because most couples choose the month of June to exchange vows needs to review his statement. Statistics revealed that there are more weddings held during the month of December than the month of June. And I can say, I can attest to this. I witnessed three weddings this month and another one before the year ends. One of the weddings I attended was the wedding of two of my former students, Jowell Caldamo and Eloizza Tinana.

The lovely couple Jowell and Eloi

When I saw Eloi's status on her Facebook account that Jowell has proposed and they are already engaged, I got really excited. "Kilig" is an understatement I could not help but send them a message to congratualte them for their coming wedding. Then last month, I received an invitation from them to attend their wedding and witness their exchange of marital vows. Of course, I confirmed my attendance without any hesitation. Aside from the fact that they are special to me, I love weddings! I am ahopless romantic so I guess that should be expected from me.

My High School Batch Christmas Reunion

December is not only the month of weddings and parties but also reunions among families and friends. What a nice feeling it is to see old friends and colleagues! I, too had my share of reunions last week. After attending the wedding of my former students and the birthday party of my former colleague's daughter, which was also a reunion of sort with her and our former students, I attended the Christmas Reunion of my high school batchmates.

This is already the third year of our Christmas party, which has became a tradition for our batch since we had the grand alumni homecoming two years ago. I missed the party last year because it coincided with my husband's high school batch party as well so I ensured my presence for the party. I even helped in the preparation so that I can give an excuse to my husband just in case he will not allow me to attend it. On the other hand, I am confident that he will permit me because he knows I rarely go out.

Party Time at Victoria Court

I remember two years ago, my husband and I received an invitation from the wife of one of our friends to grace the golden birthday of her husband. Of course, we were more than delighted to attend the event. His wife told us that it will be a surprise party and a private party so we have to keep quiet about the whole plan. But upon learning that it will be held at Victoria Court, I was the one who got more surprised! How can we party inside Victoria Court?

I Won! I Won! (Again!)

It was a last minute notification. I got invited to attend another bloggers event, a launch of an array of cutting edge technology products. A part of me was saying no because I have a long list of thing on my to-do list. On the other hand, the techie me was saying yes because I know I should see the latest on the technology. My budget does not allow me to upgrade yet, but I can get to see the devices and "one-night experience" the gadgets, even for a night. Talk about one-night stand! LOL.

We spent the night listening to the product specifications, watching product demonstrations, and getting a "feel" of each product presented. There were lots of them! From memory cards, motherboards, video cards, to monitor and tablets. Name it!

I definitely enjoyed the night. Aside from the sumptuous meal they served (Who would say no to food? Definitely, not me!), I had the chance to mingle with my blogger-friends and meet new ones as well. And of course, winning the Archos Home Tablet was the biggest delight for the night.

Looks like December has a lot of revelation for me. Aside from winning in Impressca's blogging contest, I won again. Honestly, I do not consider myself lucky when it comes to raffle contests so winning the grand prize is really an astonishment. Life indeed is full of surprises, I wonder what's next.

P.S. Thank you to Mr. Rey Belen of Girl and Boy Thing for taking the photo and sharing it with me.

"The Adventures of Tintin" Premiere Night at IMAX Theater SM-Southmall

The mere mention of SM-Southmall to my children sends my children to ecstasy. They know it means movie, food, and shopping. As I have mentioned in one of my previous posts, my family loves to go to SM-Southmall because of its proximity and the wide array of stores located inside the mall, which makes our shopping more fun and convenient.

In one of our visits to the mall, the kids saw a poster of an upcoming movie "The Adventures of Tintin". The poster itself depicts both sea and road adventures. My two boys asked if we can see the movie when it starts showing on the movie house. I hesitated. I do not have any idea who Tintin is so I need to research first what kind of movie this is. They both agreed.

After that trip to the mall, I got too busy writing posts for my blogs and articles for my clients as well as attending different events that I forgot my promise to my boys that I will do a research about the movie before I can give my word whether they can see it or not. Good thing the boys seemed to have forgotten it as well.

It was only until I received an invitation from SM-Southmall last Saturday to attend the premiere showing of "The Adventures of Tintin" that I was reminded to research some information regarding the movie. The premiere showing was held last night on their IMAX theater. And when the kids saw me watching the trailer and reading articles related to the movie, they asked if they can see the movie or not.

I Won! I Won!

Last Thursday, I received a message from the event coordinator of Impressca, the restaurant I blogged about last month. The message said I won a special prize from Impressca, based on the review I made on their restaurant after their advocacy launch. I got really excited!

More than the prize itself, the fact that my writings are read and recognized, it brings more honor to me and I really appreciate it. It gives inspiration to write better as well as motivation to write more.

Today, I Am Thankful For...

Today is Thanksgiving Day for our family and friends in the United States. I can smell the roasted turkey on the dining table. Thanksgiving dinner is very special as they enumerate the things they are thankful for the year.

Though I am not in the US, I would like to share my list of the things I am thankful for. In random order, I am thankful for...

Holiday Runway Picks by SM-Southmall

SM-Southmall is one of the first malls south of Metro Manila. My family loves to hang out here because of its proximity in our place plus the availability of the products we need, which makes our shopping more fun and convenient.

When I went there last Friday, I was able to witness the biggest fashion show event in the South Metro. The Holiday Runway Picks showcased its holiday collection for men, ladies, teens, and kids. Several international and local brands participated in the runway event, including Bayo, Terranova, For Me, Folded & Hung, Payless Shoesource, Levi’s, Celine, Regatta, Fitflop, Maldita, Petit Monde, Just G, Le Jean De Marithe Francois Girbaud, Shubizz, Accessorize, Tomato, Michelis, The Travel Club, Oxygen, Tibal, Onesimus, Our Tribe, Penshoppe, Arrow, Peppermint, Periwinkle, Oshkosh B’gosh, and Gingersnaps.

The SM-Southmall Holiday Runway Picks showed that holiday celebrations are all about parties and get-togethers with the entire family and friends, starting from day until night, and up to the wee hours of the morning. This fashion event not only proved that fashion in South Metro is very laid back but it also featured the latest collections for the entire family, a fashion that can go from laid back casual to hip and trendy and dressy in an instant.

Sweet, Final Quarter for Candy Pangilinan

My kids love to watch Daldalita, an afternoon show in GMA, while they are having their after-school snack. They enjoy watching Daldalita and her animal friends. Earlier today, I watched the show with my children. I realized that the voice of Mother Daisy, the duck, is Candy Pangilinan's. It was then that I asked myself what is the latest with her. The question prompted me to do my research. Gee, I am glad to find out that she is still around even more than  two decades in the entertainment industry.

Candy Pangilinan has joined the roster of talents of the fast-rising TV-5 network, where she is currently a part of the television adaptation of the classic 1980s teen film Bagets. Candy plays the challenging role of a single mom who has three bi-racial children: a Filipino-Japanese, a Filipino-Korean, and an Afro-Asian. Under the direction of Mark Reyes, Bagets airs on TV-5 every Sundays at 3 PM, after Paparazzi

Candy is also set to appear on upcoming television adaptation of another classic 1980s film P.S. I Love You where she plays the role of Dina Bonnevie's best friend. Despite the many best friend role she has portrayed, Candy is challenged how she will give the role a fresh and different twist that will set it apart from other best friend roles that she has portrayed.

2011 Licensure Examination for Teachers Results Released

The result of the 2011 Licensure Examination for Teachers held last September 25 has been released. I read the news form the GMA News feed on my Facebook account.

When I browsed through the names of our new licensed teachers, I felt joy and at the same time, proud, when I saw the name of my husband's nephew, Joselito D. Aquino, on the roster of those who passed the examination. We have a new professional in the family!

Stellar-Philippines Opens Its Second Office

I used to work in a call center. I spent the last eight years of my life in the industry before deciding to work at home and be a full-time writer and blogger. I felt a sigh of relief as I submitted my resignation letter to our HR Department. No more calls... no more queues... no more metrics... and most of all, no more bosses.

Despite the eight long years, I could not stop myself from asking former colleagues and bosses about updates and events on the industry every now and then. Would you blame me? It fed my family for eight years! So, when a friend invited me to grace the opening of the second office of Stellar-Philippines, a call center located in Quezon City, I did not hesitate and immediately confirmed my attendance. Somehow, I know deep inside me, I miss life inside call center.

"Ang Babae sa Septic Tank" Goes to Oscars

The Film Academy of the Philippines chose the movie "Ang Babae sa Septic Tank" to represent the Philippines in the 84th Academy Awards Best Foreign Langauage Film Category. Written by Chris Martinez and directed by Marlon Rivera, the movie features Eugene Domingo, Kean Cipriano, JM De Guzman and Cai Cortez.

Ang Babae sa Septic Tank narrates a day in the life of three ambitious and passionate but misguided filmmakers as they set out a short pre-production meeting at Starbucks to create what they think to be a wonderful independent film, dreaming of international film festivals and awards, such as the Oscars. Producer Bingbong (JM De Guzman), Director Rainier (Kean Cipriano), and Production Assistant Jocelyn (Cai Cortez) are graduates of topnotch film school who believe they have the energy and the drive to produce an award-winning movie and turn their dream into reality, no matter what the cost may be.

Impressca: Healthy Choices, Healthy Pleasures

Aside from supporting the fight against cancer and campaigns on environment protection, I am also a supporter of healthy lifestyle. Healthy living has been one of my advocacy since I was young. I do not drink coffee because we learned in grade school that it is not good for the nervous system. And despite the information campaign that coffee helps the fight against cancer, I still do not drink this beverage. Perhaps, it has something to do with the taste this time. I prefer to eat fish and vegetables because I believe they are healthier for both our body and the planet. I even grow a mini-herb garden in our terrace to help reduce the air pollution and create a greener environment.

Thus, when I received an invitation to attend the advocacy launch of Impressca, a restaurant located in the heart of Quezon City, I immediately confirmed my attendance without any hesitation. Impressca is an Italian word that literally means "freshly served".

A SpongeBob Birthday for Arkin

If you have been following my blog, you may wonder who Arkin is. All my three kids Joma, E-mann, and Eiya have already celebrated their birthdays, so who is Arkin?

Gann Arkin Ortiz San Agustin is the son of my husband's niece. In other words, he is my children's nephew... and my husband's grandchild. NOTE: My husband's, not mine! It still does not sink in to me that I am already a grandmother. I am still young!

Lost! (Part 2)

When the bus we were riding did not turn right on Gil Puyat Ave as we were expecting, we already expected it will take us longer to get to the cemetery. Fortunately enough, the bus took the turn where we least expected it and so we went back to the route we should take. Unknown to us, there will be another lost story to take place during the day.

It was already 12PM when we left La Loma Catholic Cemetery. My sisters and my mom will proceed to Eternal Gardens Memorial Park in Quezon City where my grandparents (my mom's parents) were buried while we will go straight to the Heritage Memorial Park in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig to visit my mother-in-law's grave. Again, we took the LRT train, but this time got off at EDSA station. The kids were excited to ride the jeepney, but after learning that we will walk (again!) from the gate of the cemetery to their grandmother's grave, they requested that we hire a cab. Why not? Cars are allowed inside this cemetery anyway. I was laughing my heart out as we wait for the cab that will bring us to Heritage Memorial Park.

When we arrived in the memorial park, my eldest son Joma asked for permission if he can go to what he call "The Great Wall of China", because it really looks like The Great Wall. I allowed him because the wall is within the area where we can still see him. Moreover, he promised that he will be back after 5 minutes.

November 1 is a national holiday for the Filipinos in observance of All Saint's Day as Filipinos remember their dearly departed. In lieu with the tradition, Filipinos flock to the cemeteries to visit the graves of their family members who had gone ahead of them to pay respect and offer prayers. Some families also grab this opportunity to go to their provinces and reunite with their family and relatives.

In our case, we take advantage of this day to introduce our kids to their grandparents whom they did not have the chance to meet, especially their grandfathers, who passed away several years before they were born. This year, we did not go to my father-in-law's grave anymore because we did not bring a car and anticipated the heavy traffic in Himlayang Pilipino in Tandang Sora. Besides, my husband as well as his other siblings already paid a visit to their father's grave on his birthday last Thursday so we removed Himlayang Pilipino in our itinerary for the day.

A Visit to LAC Farm: An Organic Lagundi Farm

It has been raining the past couple of days and the cold weather has caused cough and colds to my husband and children. Fortunately for me, I have a strong immune system so I don't easily get sick.

I always keep medicines for fever, cough, and colds for these kinds of emergency situations. However, the bottle of cough syrup we have on our medicine cabinet has gone out but their cough has not yet releaved. A friend recommended Ascof cough medicine saying that it is better for the kids because it is more natural and it does not contain any chemical ingredient. We decided to try it and found out for ourselves that it is indeed effective.

A week later, I received an invitation to visit a lagundi farm. Remembering how the lagundi cough syrup helped my family a lot, I did not hesitate to accept the invitation. When I received the itinerary, it was only then that I realized we will be going to Ascof lagundi farm! I can feel the excitement ran on my blood!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This is a repost from my old blog as my contribution to the Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

I came across an advertisement about Avon's Walk for Breast Cancer yesterday. When I checked the post and looked for more information, I got sad! The event is already finished. It was held last October 3 at the SM Mall of Asia Open Grounds. How did I miss it?

Aside from being eco-friendly, I am also a breast cancer supporter in my own little way and I have been waiting for this event to show my support to this advocacy. I have seen relatives and family members of my friends passed away because of breast cancer. However, when I personally saw how my friend Marivic Pebte battled and left us because of this dreaded disease, I promised myself that I will contribute to the awareness of this illness.

Domino's Pizza Opens in SM-Las Pinas

When I heard the news that Domino's Pizza will open in SM-Las Pinas, I got really excited. I miss Domino's Pizza! It has been several years ago since I had a taste of their delicious toppings and crunchy pizza.

The excitement even rose higher when I received an invitation to grace their opening day, I knew I have to be there! After all, it is only a few blocks away from our place. Hence, after picking up the kids from school last Friday, I proceeded to SM-Las Pinas and met other bloggers while waiting for the formal opening ceremony.

A Stormy Birthday for our Princess Eiya

Our youngest child, Eiya, is celebrating 5th her birthday today! She is our only girl so we call her "our princess".

We are supposed to go out today and have some family bonding time. It has been a month ago since we went out when our Kuya Joma turned 8. The plan is to go to The Lost Eden Recreational Park in Paranaque after our lunch int he nearby mall; however, nature took its course and prevented us from going out of the house. Typhoon Quiel is currently devastating some parts of the country. Though we are not experiencing much rain, logic says it is still not safe to go out during the storm. To make the situation worse, Eiya has fever since the other day. It is indeed a bad day for our princess!

E-mann is now 6!

My second son, E-mann turns 6 today and he is too excited for his birthday. He woke up earlier than usual and prepared for school.

E-mann is my quiet little boy people think he is shy. But, no he is not. Unlike our Kuya Joma, E-mann is simply not the PR man who would approach and greet friends and relatives on gatherings and parties. He would prefer to sit on a corner and observe everybody. But brace yourself, as he will bombard you with his why's and how's after the event.

It Was All An Accident!

It was already almost 12PM and I have not received any text message from my husband if he is going to pick up the kids in school. He was not replying to my text messages as well. So, I did not wait any longer and went to school to pick them up. I hurriedly walked to school, decided not to take the public transportation so that I can get to school faster. There is a heavy traffic on the main road due to the road construction near their school.

The two boys were already out of their classrooms when I arrived and were playing with their other classmates who were also waiting for their parents and guardians. Upon seeing me, they picked up their stuff, we immediately left the school grounds. I knew right then that they were already hungry, worse, possibly starving.

As soon as we got out of the school grounds, we saw my husband and his colleague arriving on their motorcycles. I asked E-mann to go to his Tito Ruel, my husband's colleague, while Joma and I rode with my husband.

Joma Turns 8

We really do not know what to do to celebrate Joma's birthday. The original plan, as per his request, is to hold a party in school during their hour-long lunch break, which is basically good enough to have a lunch party. But plans changed when the government declared August 30 a holiday in celebration of the Eid'l Fitr (or the end of Ramadan).

It was almost lunch when all my three kids went inside the room while I was working and they said they wanted to watch the Disney movie Cars 2, not in regular big screen but in 3D! They have never been to a 3D cinema yet so they were very excited with the idea. Although I know it will be expensive for us and we may go beyond the budget, how can you say no when all your kids have already set their minds into doing something even before they told you? Besides, one of them is celebrating his birthday! So I told them to take a bath and get dressed while I asked for a few minutes to wrap up what I was doing.

Happy birthday Joma!

Today we celebrate the 8th birthday of my eldest son Joma. He may be Romnuel Joseph to his teachers and classmates, but he will always remain to be Joma to us. A lot of people, especially his teachers, how we came up with his name.

The story began even before I got pregnant. My husband and I were already attending to the documents required for our wedding and planning our first baby. We both agreed that if it will be a baby boy, we will name him after his two grandfathers who passed away a decade before he was born. Yes, both my father and father-in-law both passed away on the same year, though different months. My father's name is Romeo while my father-in-law is Manuel; hence, we came up with Romnuel, in honor of his grandfathers.

House of JCJEE Celebrates Linggo ng Wika

Last Tuesday, when Joma arrived from school during their lunch break, he showed me his notebook with a short poem written on it. He said that his teacher asked him to memorize the poem and he will recite the poem during their Linggo ng Wika program on Friday. I went through the poem, three stanzas, very short, I said to myself.

I asked the kids to have lunch first and told Joma we will rehearse the poem later that afternoon, after their class. However, there were too much homework that I totally forgot all about the poem. It was already bedtime when I suddenly remembered that he has a poem to memorize. Teacher might ask him to recite it in school the next day so I asked him to memorize at least a stanza before going to bed. I was planning to have him learn the next paragraph the following morning.

The next day, I woke him up earlier than usual and had him memorize the second paragraph. To my surprise, I did not have any difficulty waking him up and he even memorized he whole poem! I felt confidence he was prepared enough that he can recite the poem when teacher rehearses him for the program.

July 2011 Nurse Licensure Examination Results Released

The result of the 2011 Nurse Licensure Examination given last July 2 and 3 has been released. I saw the result of the examination posted on GMA News website.

Browsing through the names of our new licensed nurses, I was both proud and happy when I saw my cousin's name, Joy Noel Cruz, among those who passed the examination. We have a new professional in the family!

We knew you worked hard to finish your studies and reach your goal. We are so proud of you!

Mideo Cruz and Polytheism

An art installation of Catholic religious symbols at the Cultural Center of the Philippines opened last week. Unexpectedly, the artist Mideo Cruz created scandal and heated debates on his exhibit.

We got intrigued by his work. What does this exhibit show that so many people got upset with it? Why did it create uproar with the Catholic conservatives?

My husband finished Fine Arts in college so art appreciation is a thing for him. One night, my husband said he will be going out with some of his college friends to see the highly-criticized exhibit. I insisted on going with him. I may not be an artist like them, but at the very least, I know how to appreciate artists and their works. (I got 1.25 in Humanities 101! LOL.) Besides, I would also like to personally see what Cruz calls his “artwork”.

Cruz, a 37-year old visual and performance artist, called his art installation “Poleteismo” or “Polytheism”. According to him, polytheism refers to the worship of relics and how idolatry evolves through history and modern culture. The art installation displayed is a blend of Christ and common symbols of pop culture.
